TomTom Flagship sets sail

TomTom is coming under increased pressure recently with more and more mobile devices packing a decent punch in terms of GPS navigation. With that said, let us not confuse you; there is some distance between a dedicated GPS device like a TomTom and the Apple iPhone or Nokia N95. However, this is not going to stop TomTom diversifying somewhat, and launching their business market devices, entitled the ‘PRO 4000′ and ‘PRO 8000′.

The major differences that come with these two products are found within the security and controlability side of things. Aside from the standard 4.3 inch touch-widescreen display coupled with a global range of maps and improved routing technology (accounting for traffic speed), the new business models will also sport:

  • Dedicated PRO customer service telephone line
  • PIN lock to protect sensitive information
  • Menu lock option that eliminates distractions and fosters safe driving
  • Premium ruggedized sleeve for added durability and protection
  • One free map update to be used within 12 months of first use
  • Two-year limited product warranty

The PRO 4000 and 8000 will be available for a sparkling $329.95 and $459.95 respectively (EX VAT), although discounts will be available for bulk buys. So far, we’re not convinced that these adjustments are revolutionary enough to help TomTom reaffirm their market dominance, but it’s a healthy attempt nonetheless.
