Planar have a sturdy history when it comes to DLP projectors, so we will be keeping an eye on this item. This 3-chip offering is only a 720p projector, but do not let that fool you. Similar to cameras, there are more important things to picture quality than just the number of megapixels you pack. Given the above mentioned history, the video processing for one should be excellent. The full specification list is still under lock and key at the moment, but we do know about the following:

1,280 x 720 resolution
10,000:1 contrast ratio
2,000 lumens brightness
Supports 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p inputs
24fps playback
Two HDMI 1.3 ports (other inputs not specified)
10-bit video processing

This piece will hit you hard though, costing $15,495. With that price, perhaps the company hasn’t released the full 1080 projector because it would scare away customers! Other than this price weakness and a lack of full HD resolution, the upcoming Viper 3-Chip DLP Projector from Planar looks sweet.
