Following the SSD trail to Intel and back to OCZ

SDD News

Hot on the trial of the latest SSD news, DigitalBurn brings you up to date on what Intel and OCZ have in store for their SSD technology. Unfortunately, pricing is not available from either company for their latest revelations, but there are enough juicy tit-bits to keep even the casual observer interested in what will be storing their data in the fast-approaching future.

Firstly, OCZ, who not so long ago released news of their ‘Core Series’ line-up, have already announced an upgrade to this technology. The ‘Core Series V2’ will include some fundamental changes to the SSD capacities. Gone are the multiples of 32GB, such as 64GB and 128GB. The new OCZ Core Series V2 will offer more conventional capacities, including 30GB, 60GB, 120GB and even a mouth watering 250GB drive. Furthermore, read performances will now hit a swift 170MBps all round for any size drive and write speed will max out at 98MBps all across the board. The crème-de-la- crème however, is the future proofing effort on behalf of OCZ, who will be fitting each drive out with a mini USB port for installing firmware updates that may have potential benefits of future speed enhancement.

Turning to Intel, we have been waiting patiently to see the fruits of their hard talk, and it has now become clear that we should expect to see 1.8in 80GB and 2.5in 160GB SSDs, entitled ‘X18-M’ and ‘X25-M’ respectively. The most interesting news on these drives is the 240MBps read speed. This makes the Core Series V2 look like a traditionally slow HDD. However, the write speeds leave something to be desired, clocking in at only 70MBps. There is word that there is an enterprise version called the X25-E which hits the same read speeds and offers 170MBps write speeds. However, available in 32GB and 64GB versions, this version is likely to come at a premium price.
