iPhone finally lands voice dialing
Finally the iPhone becomes more phone-like with its function. Considering how well it does many things like GPS navigation and multimedia content such as music and movies, the iPhone distinctly lacks some basic phone functionality that any calling device should offer. We are still missing the infamous MMS, copy & paste, and video recording that most phones in the iPhone class have offered for a while now, but at least the voice dialing issue has been addressed.
The Apple gods have given the A.O.K. to Makayama’s ‘VoiceDial’ third party application. This may be familiar to those of you who originally jail-broke your old iPhone back on the 1.1.x firmware.
It is a simple piece of software which samples your own voice and lets you pair that sample with any contact in your phonebook. It does not use any recognition features other than to re-match what you initially recorded as the dialling phrase. This means that it will work fluidly across different languages, and you do not have to just say their name, you can say “give Jack a call”, and it will call Jack. This is probably better than just having “Jack” as the recorded phrase ‘cos that way it would ring jack whenever it heard you talking about him, even if you didn’t want to call him! That could be awkward.
This new and improved functionality does not come cheap though, and will cost you £14.99 or $30.
