“Cuil”: A new search engine launches and targets Google
What happens when an ex-Google employee creates a search engine, and has $33 million in venture capital to back it up? Simply put, life gets “Cuil” (pronounced “cool”). The website went live today, and is intended to rival Google in the search engine department. The website is the product of former Google employee Anna Patterson, who left the company in 2006 to focus on Cuil.
The company boasts that its search index spans across 120 billion pages, and is three times the size of Google’s index. Additionally, the results show in a different format. This, combined with the fact that Cuil doesn’t store information from website visits, are sure to make an attractive alternative to Google. Patterson and her team are betting on it.
