Windows XP reaches completion for OLPC’s

The ‘OLPC’

Microsoft has officially completed the OLPC version of Windows XP, and is ready to begin the distribution process. The operating system has been watered down to support the low-end computers, and is only intended for use on the OLPC systems; computers designed primarily for users in poor countries.  Through the barebones version of XP, a smaller screen, and flash-based program storage, the company is able to offer the computer at the $200 price point.

The system originally shipped with a version of Linux known as ‘Sugar,’ which was effectively free for the organization.  Without offering a solution of sorts, Microsoft would have lost a new market if it couldn’t deliver some version of an operating system.  In a disappointing note, however, Microsoft noted that users who purchased the computer through the Give 1 Get 1 program will not be eligible for Windows XP.
