Gateway to exit direct PC sales business

Gateway logoGateway, which we remember as the original icon of direct PC sales in the 90’s (right along with CompUSA), has officially begun the process of exiting the direct-order sales market. Though the closure may surprise some, particularly given Gateway’s early success with the direct PC sales market, the move is intended to align the company’s approach with its parent company, Acer.  According to their research, moving to a single model will save on costs by simplifying the sales process.

Though no timetable is given for the transition, the move marks a significant shift by the company.  After years of success with direct selling method, the company’s efforts became troubled due to inventory not being available in the individual stores. The manufacturer then expanded into the retail market after the purchase of eMachines.

On a personal note, we remember it all the way back to the Gateway 2000 days.  We’ll let this one slide, but when they get rid of the cow spotted boxes, we’re really going to get mad.
