Upcoming AMD processors to scare Intel

AMD new Processor Socket

AMD new Processor Socket

A bit of a technical post, so we’ll keep it simple as possible. The processor manufacturer AMD, who currently reside on the far side of Intel’s dominating shadow, have recently revealed their road-map for their new line of processors. The new 8-core and 12-core CPUs will sit in a new socket offering DDR3 support; the G34.

For those more interested in the technical details, this new socket will have 767 pins more than the current design, bringing the total to 1,974 pins. Each new CPU will boast 12MB of L3 cache and four HyperTransport 3 interconnects and enough lanes for quad-channel DDR3.

All of these changes come in the wake of AMD’s CEO stepping down. They have to look like they’re still trying, right? In short, it would seem that AMD are trying to get themselves back on the map. The new chips are code-named ‘Sau Paulo’, and apparently there will be pre-production units available in early 2009.
