Want some cash for your old iPhone? “Recycle” it
If you want some extra cash for your iPhone, be sure to “recycle” it - you may even get your new 3G model for free. New York Times reporter David Gallagher was walking by the Apple store in Soho when he heard someone mention getting the iPhone 3G for free. Upon further inspection, he stumbled across FreeiPhoneSwap.com, a website promising to give up to $300 for old iPhones, thus making the purchase of the new one free. While they claimed that the phones were going to be “recycled,” many (including David Gallagher) could see the true purpose of the company.
While the organization isn’t being completely specific, the phones are most likely being sent overseas to countries that have no concern with slower data speeds, or countries without an iPhone market, such as China. Sam Hickson, who described himself as the “manager” of the company, said “My personal opinion is that people, when they see that we are paying $200 or $300 for an iPhone, I don’t think their assumption is that we’re just going to melt down the parts and make something else out of them,” he said. “I think there is an understanding that there is value there.”
