Sony to add 80GB drive to base PS3 model in September
While Microsoft was busy readying up its new Xbox 360 details yesterday, Sony quietly announced that it is upgrading its 40GB PS3 gaming console to include a larger 80GB hard disk while maintaining its original $399 price tag. This new 80GB PS3 model will start shipping in September and “will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage”, which we assume means it will lack the ability to play legacy PS2 games and will not have an on-board memory card reader, as is the case with the current 40GB model.
The new system, dubbed the 80GB PS3 Core Pack, also features a Blu-ray player, HDMI output, WiFi, a Cell Broadband Engine, and a DualShock 3 controller.
