Test of Samsung’s WEP301 Bluetooth headset with cover skins

Samsung WEP-301 Bluetooth Headset

At first glance, the Samsung WEP301 may seem to be a typical silver headset. However, when one opens the package that opinion can change. The WEP301 offers an AC charger adapter, 3 earpiece covers in different sizes, a detachable ear hook, a user manual and guide, and six skins to personalize the silver part of the headset. I love the ability to customize a headset to fit your outfit or lifestyle and the skins included in the bundle allow you to do just that.

The device was easy to pair and within seconds it was up and running. One thing that I love on this headset is Samsung’s choice of earpiece design. This is by far the most comfortable headset I have ever worn. For those with smaller ears the device fits perfectly and as a result sound quality is outstanding. Hours after inserting the headset I still barely felt it resting in my ear. For those wanting even more customization, the packaging offers three additional earpiece covers.

In call tests results were mixed. Call quality on my end was phenomenal thanks to the perfect fit in my ear. I had absolutely no problem hearing anyone in my usual test areas: home, restaurant, park, and car. Volume was loud and I found that in quiet areas I was able to turn the volume down and still hear the caller. The receiving end was different, however, with callers often reporting that I sounded as if I was in a bubble regardless of location. Callers would frequently say “Where in the world are you?” or “Are you on a headset?” even when in relatively quiet environments. I was forced to end the calls in the restaurant and in the car (window slightly down) due to the caller being unable to hear me. Even in a closed car I would occasionally get a “What is that humming?” The noise canceling technology was lacking in this headset.

Samsung rates the WEP301 for five hours of talk time per charge and 80 hours of standby time. I was able to get approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes out of the device before the low battery warnings began. The device had a decent range; I was able to get 15-20 feet away from the phone before the static began. As expected the range varied depending if walls were in the way or not.

In conclusion, Samsung offers a device that is stylish and user-friendly at an affordable price. Battery life is acceptable and the feel of the headset is perfect for a road warrior or someone in need of a headset for an extended period of time. While it doesn’t shine in loud settings, the headset would be more than acceptable in a car. We give the Samsung WEP301 a “Recommended” rating, with some reservations if you tend to make a lot of calls in noisy environments.

Pros: Fantastic feel; easy to wear for hours, affordable, decent battery life

Cons: Performs poorly in loud environments

  2. Does anyone know how to pair the device with another phone?

i first paired it to mine, but now i want it on my wife’s phone only…is there anyway to make it not pair to mine and just pair to her’s from now on?

is it normal for these devices to only be paired once for the life of the device?

  3. No, any headset can be paired as many times as needed. Turn it off, then hold down the button to turn it back on, but don’t let go of the button. Eventually the headset will start flashing a different color or something obvious, that is when it is in pairing mode. Most every headset on the planet works the same way - this one is probably no different.
