New OCZ ‘Core Series’ lowers SSD costs

Solid State Disks (SSD) have begun to make bigger and bigger news in mainstream blogs, and we are sure that this will be the biggest of them all. OCZ are a manufacturer of the SSD technology, and have reportedly found a way to produce SSDs at half the cost without any compromise to performance (read/write speeds in the range of 100MBps and 80MBps).

Why is this important? Well, the current hang-up for SSDs is their cost.

Although they use less energy and have no moving parts, they have the potential to perform much faster than traditional hard drives. But the production costs of these SSD units has been extremely high compared to the older Hard Disk Drive (HDD) technology.

The new ‘Core Series’ line is available in 32GB (’OCZ OCZSSD2-1C32G’), 64GB (’OCZ OCZSSD2-1C64G’) and 128GB (’OCZ OCZSSD2-1C128G’) capacities, and will cost only $169, $259 and $479 respectively.

Although these prices are more expensive than a bog-standard HDD, compared to the asking price of $1300+ for the previous 128mb SSD version only 2 months ago, things are certainly looking up!
Still not convinced? Compare this price tag to a Western Digital Velociraptor, around $300+. The supreme high-end HDD aren’t that much cheaper, and not as good. For example, the SSD seek time is 0.35ms and this makes them up to 10x faster than traditional HDDs for everyday activities.
