ATI graphics cards running nVidia PhysX?

Extreme modders over at NGOHQ reveal that they have been successful in porting nVidia’s PhysX to an AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870.

AMD (who own ATI) have been playing catch-up to nVidia’s new GPU-accelerated PhysX technology. With the launch of nVidia’s GTX 200-series, anyone has been able to experience PhysX. However, AMD have only recently announced a partnership with Havok, whereby it intends to optimise their physics engine to play extremely nicely with its ATI hardware.

Unfortunately, NGOHQ have not made any drivers public yet, and we are therefore unable to confirm their alleged statement. Theoretically, however, the notion is completely plausible. There is nothing that NGOHQ need that isn’t publically available, apart from some extreme know-how.

While we are sure that nVidia will keep a watch on this to see how it pans out, they appeared relatively calm upon hearing the news, merely starting that everything the modders used is open source and anyone cannot adopt it if they wish. Like us, they are clearly awaiting proof from the NGOHQ camp.
