Skyhook XPS: Next generation GPS using Wi-Fi and Satellite
Skyhook Wireless isn’t exactly the first player in the game when it comes to GPS technology. They have spent years building a Wi-Fi positioning system that maps all 8,000 hotspots in North America, and they are behind the technology of geotagging photos.
Today, Skyhook announced WPS 2.0, billed as a “next generation hybrid positioning system.” The system will combine the GPS results of satellites, Wi-Fi, and cell phone towers, all to make the system as accurate as possible.
Skyhook has currently mapped 70 percent of the world’s population. With this technology, one would never be lost again.
