Apple’s MobileMe e-mail addresses go live

MobileMe

Apple’s MobileMe service

Remember MobileMe, the replacement to the .Mac software announced at Apple’s WWDC, has launched. Users can now activate their me.com e-mail addresses. “Current .Mac subscribers can already take advantage of their MobileMe email addresses even though the new service isn’t scheduled to launch until July 11. The transition means that anyone with a .Mac email address can receive messages at their current mac.com address as well as their new me.com address,” according to Jeff Gamet, reporter for The Mac Observer.

The older mac.com address will still be usable - for now, at least. Current .Mac members will still be able to use the account, but the account will also be given a new email address: @me.com. MobileMe will only work with Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later, although Mac OS X Leopard is strongly recommended to allow users to take full advantage of MobileMe.

MobileMe launches on July 11th. The application is a subscription-based service with 20GB of storage for US$99 per year for individuals and $149 for a Family Pack.
