We are proud to introduce the new Motorola ROKR E8, hands-on! Although it might not have any physical keys, don’t let that fool you – this phone makes up for this in other departments, as the unboxing will reveal.

Unlike the growing trend to go completely touch screen, the ROKR E8 chooses to adopt a slightly different, more economical approach. As a completely solid device, it touts a context sensitive LCD keypad with tactile vibration feedback. Context sensitive as in the keypad will change depending on what you are doing with the phone, such as listening to music or merely making a call. Motorola has named this technology ‘ModeShift’.

Another important feature of the new ROKR E8 music phone is its FastScroll nav wheel that allows the user to quickly scroll through playlists and contacts with the slide of a thumb. In a quick test, the scroll wheel seemed quite responsive but did tend to overshoot the desired item. Hopefully as we test further this little bug will work itself out.

The innovative design is supported with a slightly above standard feature set that includes a 2-megapixel camera, a 2-inch QVGA screen, Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP enabled), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Clearly designed as a music phone, Motorola claims that the device does MP3s better than some dedicated MP3 music players, and the 2GB of internal memory would certainly point that way. If that’s not enough for avid music lovers, Motorola also offers a microSD slot to ease the pain by up to an additional 4GB.

Weighing in at 100g and with only 10.6 millimeters of thickness, the ROKR E8 is a gem in the rough and may be exactly what Motorola needs to reinvent its flailing line of phones. A full review will be available over at MobileBurn soon, but until then, enjoy the gallery.
