AMD ATI push out even newer GPU chipsets

ATI Radeon 4800-Series

So even now that AMD and ATI have had a while to get to know each other well, we were still somewhat disappointed with the lower end 4800-Series cards. The 4870-Series, on the other hand, was kept a complete secret from everyone until now. Even those with the insider scoops were strictly forbidden from mentioning the card, let alone that the specifications. Well folks, the AMD ATI duo have finally produced something worth listening to.

Inside the 4800-Series cards is a RV7700 chipset. This chipset is quite special and offers the following specifications to keep the most hardcore gamers playing nice with others:

  • 256-bit memory interface
  • 55nm manufacturing process
  • 800 stream processors
  • DirectX 10.1 support
  • Support for GDDR3, GDDR4 and GDDR5 memory
  • Enhanced UVD engine

That is to say, GPU accelerated Blu-ray picture in picture and 7.1-channel audio pass-through.

The new chipset is also in the 4850-Series, but the card in question (4870-Series) will push a core clock speed of 750MHz and stacks GDDR5 memory crunching at a dizzying 3.6Ghz clock speed. At this point it might be a good opportunity to ask how the increased clock-speed is achieved. The 4870-Series sports a dual-slot cooler, oh, and not to mention a price of around a ~$750-$800. But compared to the competition this is actually quite reasonable. Time will tell if the fierce price competition will be enough to win ATI some market share.
