According to a recent JVC press statement, the company will be releasing the “world’s thinnest LCD TVs with built-in tuners”. The most important part of that quote would be the ‘built-in’ part, whereby without this addition their claim to fame would be, quite simply, false.

The stated contrast levels are, as always, ‘brilliant’, but who believes any company who says this (unless you’re Pioneer, of course). Rest assured, the slimmer design should not affect the black-levels however, since the JVC engineers have designed a slimmer backlighting system that effectively allows for the overall slim down of the entire set.

In modern times there is really no excuse for any TV not to come with a built-in digital tuner, since it eliminates the requirement for (another) seemingly obsolete ‘box’. It is safe to say JVC are doing us a favour, but so should everyone else. The awaited sets will come in two main flavors, the 42-inch and the 46-inch versions. Both sport a 1920 x 1080p resolution and will be available for $1,899.99 and $2,399.99, respectively.

Now if only Sony could get their OLED mass produced, then the race would be on…
