Going green seems to be all the rage these days and handset manufacturer Samsung has joined the party. The company introduced a pair of handsets in Korea today that are using bioplastic material made from cornstarch that excludes some environmentally un-friendly materials such as brominated flame retardants and polyvinyl chlorides.

The SCH-W510 ‘Bio Cover Phone’ is a CDMA slider that contains cornstarch for its bioplastic material used on the device’s battery cover and utilized a environmentally-friendly metal finishing process as well as an anti-bacterial material on its surface.

The sleek SGH-F268 GSM handset decided to keep harmful materials at bay by removing brominated flame retardants (BFR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from its list during manufacturing. The F368 sales package also includes a headset and charger that are also environmentally friendly.

“Samsung is striving to continue to be a strong corporate citizen that contributes to environmental sustainability,” said Geesung Choi, President of Samsung’s Telecommunication Business. “Now we are trying not only to launch more environmentally-conscious products with more renewable material and less energy consuming, but also to expand and proactively set up a phone recycling system”.

Both handsets are due out later this month with the SGH-F268 heading to the Chinese market first.
