Apple iPhone 3G launches for $199 on July 11

iphone-3g1Apple has finally shown its highly anticipated 3G iPhone, which sports a similar look to the original model. The iPhone front remains unchanged but its back and sides seem to have undergone the knife. The new model features thinner edges, a full black plastic back, solid metal buttons, and a flush-mounted headphone jack. Other features of note include A-GPS and improved audio.

The new 3G model boasts faster data speeds, with loading times encroaching WiFi speeds. Apple claims its new 3G model is 36% faster than Nokia’s flagship N95 and Palm’s Treo 750. The 3G iPhone offers up to 300 hours (12.5 days) of 3G standby battery life, 5 hours of 3G talk time, 5-6 hours of web browsing, 7 hours of video playback, or a full 24 hours worth of audio.

The new Apple iPhone 3G will be available around the world in over 70 countries but will start with 22 of the largest on July 11. The iPhone 3G 8GB model will retail for US$199 and the 16GB model, which is available in black or white, will be available for US$299. Unlimited data will cost an additional US$30 in addition to a voice plan.
