T-Mobile USA takes Starbucks to court

T-Mobile USA is suing coffee house giant Starbucks over a breach of contract regarding its WiFi agreement. The company filed a complaint on Thursday in the New York Supreme Court citing that Starbucks “secretly” created a plan with wireless competitor AT&T to provide wireless Internet in its stores.

In February, a transitional agreement between the two companies stated that T-Mobile was given the exclusive right to “sell, market and promote its services” in Starbucks’ stores until they were fully converted to the AT&T WiFi system. T-Mobile is claiming that AT&T benefited from the agreement at its expense and also states “Starbucks and AT&T ’secretly’ developed a promotional plan under which they would offer free AT&T and Starbucks WiFi even in stores that were still using T-Mobile’s infrastructure,” the lawsuit said.

T-Mobile is seeking unspecified damages for the breach.
