MacOS 10.6 to debut at WWDC 2008?

Apple logo computerApple news website TUAW has received information that MacOS 10.6 may reach developer’s hands as early as next week’s WWDC.  It is being reported that 10.6 will not contain any major updates, instead focusing solely on security and stability.  More importantly, it appears that 10.6 will only support the Intel chipset, leaving the PowerPC Mac users behind and marking the end of an era for the company.

With the full switch to the Intel architecture, current PowerPC users are concerned with the availability for universal applications, as Apple (and most third party software companies) will begin the switch to Intel only offerings. It is expected that 10.6 will ship in January of 2009, following the Macworld Expo.  We have to wonder, though: what will the new version’s code name be?  We’d be willing to bet on Lynx or Cougar, as Apple currently owns naming rights to the two ‘cats,’ however, with all things technology, it is a wait-and-see game.
