Apple may change its .Mac service name to ‘Mobile Me’

MacOS XOften criticized for its relatively basic features and high price tag, Apple’s .Mac service may be getting a refresh - and a rebranding as well. Apple enthusiasts are noting changes in the “Localizable.strings” resource in the latest Mac OS X refresh, 10.5.3.

According to enthusiasts, almost everywhere “.Mac” has been replaced with %@, meaning that the name of Apple’s online service will be inserted programmatically by applications. Insider sources are pointing to “Mobile Me” as the new brand title, and www.me.com appears to be registered to Kenneth Eddings, the official technical contact for many of Apple’s registered domain names.

Regardless, it’s nice to see a rumor coming from the Apple camp that doesn’t relate to the 3G iPhone. It appears as if there might be two surprises at WWDC this month.
