Truphone offers low cost international dialing

TelephoneIf you prefer things that are easy, and are sick of paying an arm and a leg for international voice calls, then this service is something to consider.  When properly set up, the service works by dialing the usual international phone number. Truphone immediately recognizes the international call, and instead of letting it route through your carrier, it dials through the Truphone server. A local Truphone number is then returned to the device, saving money by using your pool of wireless minutes instead of charging international rates through your carrier.

Once enabled, the ‘hard work’ (the call-through and call-back technology) is done invisibly and quickly. Read below for a cost matrix; based on what we see, we’d certainly try it in a heartbeat.  Keep in mind, however, that dialing 911 through Truphone isn’t possible at this time.  So, while we wouldn’t be quite able to replace our landline/cell phone, this certainly offers a worthy (and cheaper) alternative to international calls.

Truphone Anywhere can significantly reduce call costs compared to standard international tariffs:

  • UK example: to make a 10 minute call from the UK to an Australian landline:
    - price with Orange Pay Monthly: £0.50/min x 10 = £5.00
    - price with Truphone Anywhere: £0.03/min x 10 = £0.30
    - how: an in-bundle call to Truphone’s UK server, plus a £0.03/min Truphone call to an Australian landline.
  • USA example: to make a 10 minute call from the USA to a Chinese landline:
    - price with AT&T International Dial Standard rates: $3.49/min x 10 = $34.90
    - price with AT&T World Connect (additional $3.99 per month): $0.15/min x 10 = $1.50
    - price with Truphone Anywhere: $0.06/min x 10 = $0.60
    - how: an in-bundle call to Truphone’s USA server, plus a $0.06/min Truphone call to a Chinese landline.
