Research In Motion and India reach roadblock in BlackBerry talks
For those that remember the initial launch of BlackBerry devices in India, the agreement between Research In Motion and India stipulated that the country was to be given access to the e-mails sent and received by BlackBerry users. As of late, Research In Motion has realized that it cannot provide the Indian government (or any other third party, including RIM) access to enterprise users e-mails, due to the technology and encryption behind the service.
According to statements made by RIM, there is no way to override this software, and the roadblock may exist for BlackBerry internet users as well, the company said in their statement. RIM also pointed out the government has several other tools at its disposal to track its citizens and ensure national security.
The government has requested access from the wireless carriers, and has threatened to ban them from selling service should they refuse to comply. The talks are still in progress at this time.
