New car technology could save lives, reduce impact damage

Car crashEuropean engineers are currently testing a new technology for side collision accidents, which will have the ability to predict accidents 230 milliseconds before they happen.  At that point, the system begins the deployment of a bar on both sides of the car to transfer the impact of the collision. According to the test results, the difference could be life instead of death.

When an accident is detected, it deploys the bridge bar 70 milliseconds before the crash using a high powered spring connected to a coil. By using this structure, the impact may decrease the penetration by up to three inches, as well as reducing the speed and violence of the accident.

According to research, side impact collisions are the most dangerous accidents one can sustain in the car; not only because of the danger to passengers, but the increased chance of brain damage due to the angle of penetration.  This technology could help to reduce the potential of brain injury due to the absorption of the impact.
