Today Samsung announced that it has developed a new 256GB solid state drive for laptop and notebook computers. The drive fits the normal 2.5″ form factor commonly used in portable computers, and makes use of the SATA II interface, for speedy data transfers.

This new SSD is only 9.5mm thick, and Samsung claims that it is capable of 200MB/s reads and 160MB/s writes. A 1.8″ form factor version of the drive is expected to be announced later this year, according to the company.

Flash memory based solid state drives are all the rage in portable computers today because they are lighter, faster, and use less power than their regular hard disk drive counterparts. The drives are also more durable since they lack the moving parts of a traditional hard disk. Solid state drives are very expensive, though, and until now most SSDs have topped out at about 64GB of storage capacity.
