Prototype OLPC XO version two revealed - looks like a book
Yesterday, the One Laptop Per Child project released the XOII, the projected second generation of its laptop intended for children in developing nations. We must admit, the new prototype is quite nice; it sports a book-like design and will be priced at $75 instead of the current OLPC cost of $100.
It is a totally new concept for learning devices,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the OLPC project. At its unveiling at an MIT event on Tuesday, Negroponte said he hoped the design would also be used by other manufacturers, adding that “this laptop comes from a different point of view.”
The new computer will be more energy efficient and will sport a slimmer profile. Additionally, the computer will support customization options for those receiving the device. With the projected lower cost of LCD’s, combined with the Windows XP OS option, the laptops are sure to be a hot seller when they are launched in 2010.
