Microsoft to offer cash back for online shopping
In a bold move aimed at knocking Google off its top position in online search, Microsoft is willing to pay its users to use its Windows Live Search engine when shopping online.
“2008 is the year that search got competitive,” said Bill Gates. Speaking at the company’s annual digital ad conference in Redmond, the company chairman laid out details of its latest product and told the audience to expect “big announcements around search to happen every six months”.
The new program will reward users for opting to use Microsoft’s Windows Live Search for purchasing products online. The cash back service will pay back a portion of the selling price of an item from as many as 700 Microsoft partners, including Sears, Home Depot, Barnes and Noble, Circuit City, NewEgg, and Overstock.com.
Users using Microsoft’s Live Search will receive funds direct to a Microsoft cash back account where they can then claim their funds. Cash back funds can be paid direct to a PayPal account, savings account, or via check within 14 days.
Initially, the new cash back service will only be available for users living in the U.S.
