FCC may intervene on early termination fee policies
Regardless of whether you’re a cellular phone/technology junkie and have paid numerous ETF’s (like we have), or have simply paid one in search of a carrier that’s the cheapest for your usage, most have been subject to the dreaded Early Termination Fee. Finally, it appears as if the FCC is appeasing the consumers by wanting to implement a prorated ETF policy across the board.
The proposal, offered by Verizon Wireless, allows the consumer up to 30 days or up to 10 days after the first bill to cancel service without a termination fee. Afterwards, the termination fee would drop at an undisclosed rate during the term of the contract.
Additionally, the proposed plan strips the states of their rights to regulate wireless fees, leaving any potential problems to the federal court system. Of course, we all know Verizon well enough to know that they never propose something without some benefit to themselves; the carrier is asking for protection from class action lawsuits stemming from their customers.
