Seasteading Institute plans to launch ocean colony
Sick of world governments keeping you down? Want a place to “express yourself” without worrying about the law? Gather a bunch of nerds and a few more billionaires, maneuver around the pirates, and we’ll be set. The Seasteading concept is certainly an interesting project; founded by PayPal’s Peter Thiel, and with the help of a Google engineer and a Sun programmer, the group plans to revolutionize the idea of ocean living.
The project intends to create a group of interconnected ‘rigs’ in the ocean. The towers will house living quarters, research facilities, and offices - and due to their interest in placing the buildings in unclaimed waters, there will be no formal laws.
The project is quite interesting, and certainly has received backing from several Silicon Valley billionaires, as they expect the first prototype to be in the San Francisco Bay within two years.
