Napster targets iTunes, offers 6 million DRM-free MP3 tracks
Napster, a digital music download service, has challenged Apple’s iTunes with a new music download store of its own. The new web-based music store will offer more than 6 million songs in MP3 format that are DRM-free and are compatible with almost all devices, including Apple’s iPod lineup. The difference between the iTunes and Napster is that the latter offers no limitations, while the iTunes tracks come with a Fairplay DRM, which prevents them from being played on other devices than the iPod or iPhone.
Napster MP3 tunes will be priced at US$.99 cents each with full albums starting at US$9.95.
