AMD announces low-power quad-core Opteron chips
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) made available today new low-power quad-core Opteron processor chips. The highly efficient processors have a much lower thermal envelope of 55 watts compared to current processors, which average 75-105 watts.
The new Opteron chips are aimed for servers and are available in both the 2300 and 8300 series. As the naming scheme indicates, the 2300 series is targeted at servers with two processors and the 8300 for eight or four processors.
“Our new Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors were designed to help data center managers who see power consumption and virtualization as the keys to solving their overall performance equation,” Randy Allen, general manager at AMD’s Server and Workstation Division, said in a statement.
