T-Mobile planning 3G (voice) rollout on May 1
U.S. wireless carrier T-Mobile is hoping to catch up with the rest of the pack by finally introducing its 3G service. The latest reports are revealing that the carrier will make its UMTS debut tomorrow (May 1st) in New York City. The rollout is part of T-Mobile’s goal to deepen its wireless coverage. The 2008 rollout includes the following cities: Austin, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Denver, Orlando, Minneapolis, Miami - and 12 more.
3G (UMTS) is a new T-Mobile service that will enhance the user’s call quality and data speeds, but only, of course, if the user has a 3G-capable handset. Currently, TMO offers 4 handsets capable of 3G.
Update: EngadgetMobile has received an internal T-Mobile memo stating that the 3G rollout will be for voice only. Ugh.
