New non-moving optical zoom for cameraphones developed

Tessera OptiML

Our compatriots at MobileBurn.com have posted a story about Tessera’s new optical zoom technology for cameraphones that uses no moving parts. In short, the lenses create a warped image that uses more of the sensor for the center area of the image, and then a special processing system extracts 1x, 2x, and 3x zoom images from it.

It reminds us a bit of the TrueFocus system from OmniVision that uses intentionally blurred images and special algorithms to give a fixed focus lens a very wide effective focus range.
